FOR THE “COmma-con” film series:
COPY: While our sci-fi/fantasy friends are off observing the ritual of Comic-Con, we here at the ‘theque are celebrating the superhero of the sentence, the comma, with Comma-Con. Everyone knows the best movies are the ones with excessive punctuation, from the comma drama to the comma-dy, and that’s why we’ll be screening these classics (cosplay optional):
It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
New York, New York
One, Two, Three
Kiss Me, Stupid
Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
COPY: What better way to open Comma-Con than with the comma-saturated “It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.” This 1963 romp is one of those comedies starring so many stars it’s basically a supernova: Spencer Tracy, Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, Mickey Rooney, and Ethel “Yes I Made a Disco Album” Merman all ham it up to the max. And who leads this pack of merry pranksters? None other than director Stanley Kramer. Known for directing dramas like “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” and “Judgement at Nuremberg,” Kramer conducts this slapstick star-studded cinematic celebration of silliness like a symphony. For fans of television history (Milton Berle!), film history (Mickey Rooney!), and Broadway history (Ethel “I Can Sing Louder” Merman!), this is a can’t-miss.
